Unhealthy? Hmm. He had a double lung transplant a bit over a year ago. He never got back to 100% after than and then things went really downhill.
Yikes, no wonder.

Wow. Didn't know that. Any idea what the reason for the transplants was?

I had to think a bit about answering this question and a previous one about whether Steve was unhealthy as it's the sort of thing that seems like someone might want some privacy about. But Steve was pretty open about it so I guess it's okay to discuss. He had some sort of lung disease, I can't remember the name anymore, it has a long name, and it kills your lung tissues. It's progressive and there's no cure. I think they tried a thing or two to try to slow it down that didn't work so a transplant was the only option aside from letting nature take its course.

Sorry to hear that. Like Fleming, one of the true studs of that era.
+1.

I can appreciate the hesitancy in answering. That's a shame. Tough break for Steve. I remember reading the training excerpt in Daws book over and over.

Me too. I wish I'd thought to ask him how representative it was of what he normally did but that chance is gone.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
