From the article:
to ensure that that which all others achieve with maximal effort, white people (particularly white men) achieve with minimal qualification. Barack Obama delivered to black people the hoary message that if they work twice as hard as white people, anything is possible. But Trump’s counter is persuasive: Work half as hard as black people, and even more is possible.
There are so many good excerpts in that article, because Ta-neshi Coates is an incredible writer and thinker. That is undeniable.
To summarize, Darth Cheeto has benefited greatly from this country's history of white supremacy. No black man, woman, or minority could have been elected president if they said the things that he said and done many of the things that he has done. Being a rich old white man has certain advantages in politics, and Darth Cheeto used those to his advantage. He is an opportunist.
Does that make him an outright white supremacist? I don't know. But he certainly has a strong sense of whiteness and is benefitting from this country's history of white supremacy. However, Darth Cheeto has not displayed the outright hate and bigotry that we see from individuals like David Duke, for example.
I do not have cable so I have not watched Jemele Hill since they put her on the air. I always liked her writing when it was featured more on the website. Her comment in this case was in poor taste and lacked the proper context, that is for sure. Should she be fired? That's ESPN's decision.
