I think it depends on what point in the season you are at. Some people like to train through a meet and run regular mileage the day before early season meets.
For me though, in HS we would usually do 4 miles easy and 8-10 striders the day before a race. Now I do 5-6 miles the day before a race usually, but sometimes if I want to train through an unimportant early season meet I'll do my regular 8-10 mile easy run the day before a race.
