Propaganda and misinformation are problems no doubt as is lazy reporting. Were people at these rallies there for reasons other than being white supremacists? I don't even know. Reports I've read didn't dig any deeper. I've just seen the "Jews won't replace us" chant a dozen times.
At the same time, there's been an erosion of trust in the media and academia that is all out of proportion to the crimes of the media and other institutions. Just because some Dartmouth humanities professor is an extremist doesn't mean one can't trust the CDCs assertion that vaccines are safe. At some level we have to forget about our political affiliations and trust the experts to do their jobs.
