Is it possible to excel in competitive long distance running (5K up to marathon distance or even ultra marathon distance) and be on a completely vegan/plant-based diet?
Does anyone know of any professional runners that are vegan? I can only think of ultra marathoner Scott Jurek, Morgan Mitchell, and Carl Lewis.
Ultrarunners are required to be either vegan, paleo, or fruititarian, so yes, roughly 1/3 of them are vegan. Plenty of threads on this already.
Being vegan will only boost your performance. I'm vegan and my performance and overall feeling is better than when I wasn't vegan

USATF has a rule that requires them to be vegan, paleo, or fruitarian? How do the enforce this?
