Also, Aouita ran training run times in the 1500m/5000m for him in the 'days before' (the Med games lasted for 2 weeks and I don't think had any heats or semis).
Jakob ran a 5000m pb 48 hours before his steeplechase.

Aouita ran his steeple on the 23rd September after winning the 1500m on the 20th and the 5000m on the 21st.
And for sure it was his last race of a long season (definitely because he feared to get injured) in which he was the 11th fastest over 800m, 2nd fastest over 1000m and fastest over 1500m, 1 Mile, 2000m, 2 Miles and 5000m. In the steeple he became the 24th fastest of the season (and as already said the 82nd fastest all-time).
But for sure he could have bettered this time significantly while in top shape in mid July and/or with more experience. If his steeple from 8 years back as a Junior was some help? I don't know.
"I would say though that when Aouita's steeplechase is mentioned it is often put in the context of a claim of this type - 'Aouita even ran an ultra-fast steeplechase on his debut in 1987, narrowly losing only to the Olympic bronze medalist'."
I have never ever read something like this - his steeple debut hardly is mentioned at all I think.
It was a very good effort in his first try as a top-athlete at this very special and different event. But nothing sensational.
In another thread you made some fun about my English (...probably my third language...). No, it is my second language. Yes, there definitely is room to improve. But I really would like to hear someone like you talking not so easy things in another than your mother tongue.
