I forgot to mention that $5,500 for the mortgage includes the property taxes. We live in a very nice community (great schools and low crime) and that's what you pay in the NY metro area. You're not going to find a house in the $500-600k neighborhood unless you compromise on one or the other (or both).
Employers put whatever is over the contribution limit for the 401k into post tax accounts so the numbers are slightly off. We haven't really adjusted our % contribution as our salaries rose.
Daycare is what it is. If you want to be able to work 8-5, you need to have a 7-6 daycare center. And that is not cheap in this area.
Once they're old enough they will go to public school but it still leaves shoulder care, holidays and vacations.
Again, $300k sounds great on paper but it really isn't all that much.
