because of one WC?
because of one WC?
because of one WC?
well, that and ..Because of her win ratio (6/7)Because she is much faster than any other runner by a substantial marginBecause her head to head record against Ndereba just moved to (3-1)
Ann Trason.
Paula, of course. best time, almost 3 min better than Ndereba
The only race Paula lost to Ndereba was Athens and we all know the reasons, Paua was ill.
But we all know that the greatest female distance runner in the World of all time is no other than our beloved own Regina Jacobs.
Yep, it's still Paula.
Paula reached #1 on my list in 2005 but she isn't a lock to stay there as there are 5 other active female marathoners who have time to move up considerably.
1. Paula Radcliffe*
2. Catherine Ndereba*
3. Joan Samuelson
4. Grete Waitz
5. Ingrid Krsitansen
6. N. Takahashi*
7. Mizuki Noguchi*
8. Deena Kastor*
9. Rosa Mota
10. Maraget Okaya*
still active/competitive open runners.
Deena Kastor in my opinion can reach top 5 this year with a sub 2:18 or #6 with 2:18-2:19:20
No Olympic Gold = NOT best of all time.
Face it, in 30 years, it will only be a few running nerds like ourselves who remember who won bloody Helsinki 2005. And her record will be long gone.
KK for GOAT, anyone?
I wouldn't personaly bet on her record being gone in 30 years...
everyman
Your obviously suffering from some head trauma. Paula can't be best female marathoner but you post KK-Khalid Khannouchi-for GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). If memory serves me correctly Khalid had no World or Olympic medal-Paula has World Gold. Khalid isn't even the worldrecord holder-Paula is world record holder and has 4 of 5 fastest marathons ever. Don't know why you nominated KK he is definitely a male and this discussion is about female marathoners.
Does GOAT stand for Greatest Overall rAinman aTtempt =everyman?
Greatest
Overall
rAinman
aTtempt yes is the poster everyman
If gold medals matter so much more than world records why does no one remember me? It is always Bannister this, Bannister that. Where was he in `52? Answer: behind me. All he did was set a world record, I have a freakin' Olympic gold medal.

In 30 years, people will remember Paula the same way they remember Grete Waitz (who must also suck, 'cause she never won the Olympics). It's be "Noguchi who?" and Takahashi who?"

I daresay the above statement actually has more to do with Westerners having difficulty remembering Asian names than the actual quality of the athletes.
For what it is worth I still think that Takahashi is an incredibly underrated athlete who is ignored ostensibly because she never ran her best (excluding Berlin) in Europe and America. It is a shame that she got injured after Berlin 2001, because she has never quite been the same.
Paula is an amazing runner and her world record will probably stand for sometime yet, however Mizuki Noguchi basically has the Beijing Gold already (barring injury). My reason being is that she is only 27 and she is just going to get better.

You were doing fine right up until that gem. Remember Radcliffe basically had the Athens gold until of course, she didn't. And Tergat or Korir or Khannouchi or 3 other guys basically had the Athens gold until they didn't. And Salazar or Seko or DeCastella basically had LA in 84, as did Waitz/Kristiansen, etc etc etc.
In deciding this, let's limit ourselves to the wins that have actually occurred, shall we?

Yes, you are right. It was a silly statment and I retract my statement about Noguchi winning the Beijing Gold. I still think she is a good runner, though not the greatest of all time.
Paula is still proabably the best, even without an Olympic Gold.
Paula
Methinks Wang Junxia must have a pretty poor memory as she stood on the podium after the World Junior CC in Boston in 19994? with Paula. Paula got Gold, Junxia silver. She'd heard of her alright, and been beaten by her!
Takahashi is by far the hottest of those three. What else matters?
Wasn't it the 1992 World Jr. X-Country Championships in Boston in which Paula chased and caught Wang Juxia over the snow covered course?
1. Paula Radcliffe (GB) 13:30
2. Wang Juxia (Chn) 13:35
3. Lydia Cheromei (Ken) 13:43
That's a race I'll never forget along with John Ngugi 5000m 88 Olympic, Paula Ivan 1500 88 Olympic, Wilson Kipketer's 97 Indoor Championshps win and 1:42.68 WR, Said Aoutia 800m Olympic Bronze, and Kenenisa Bekele's WR of 26:17.53!

KK has never won Olympic Gold. By your own rules, no. Kipketer never won Olympic Gold either (he did have a handful of WC golds) and I think we'd have to call him the greatest.
I don't think an Olympic Gold is a requirement. It certainly helps seal the deal, but a long track record (which Paula does not have, yet) of sustained awesomeness (which she does have) can do the trick. The Olympics can come down to luck. I'm sure Stefano Baldini is a great guy but... seriously? Gold?
