Everything causes cancer these days.
Humans are diurnal, and as such, are expected to be able to tolerate at least an hour of sun a day. If you can't do that, then I'm afraid your fear of skin cancer has gotten the best of you.
Shirtless here.

There is absolutely no direct correlation between running shirtless on a hot day and skin cancer. There has never been a study done on this.
ohhhhhhhh - we have a wannabe smart guy in the house!
There are however studies linking sun exposure by body surface area to skin cancer and running shirtless increases your total exposure - therefore, we can deduce that running shirtless increases your skin cancer risk.
Going shirtless on a hot run is worth the skin cancer risk. It really is that much better.

Agreed. I can't run topless or I'd get arrested, but if it's above 55-60 degrees I'm in a sports bra and shorts. I don't worry about skin cancer either as nearly all my running is done before 8:30 am.
I feel for you, Amkelley. You're missing out on a great thing. I could never make it as a woman.

No, real runners run when they can. During the day is good for heat acclimatization. Post above explains why people can't handle 55 degrees at Boston every year.

Acclimatization? Come on. When have you ever had to run a race during the daytime?
It can also be hot later in the day, but the UV index can be really low. It's 6pm right now, 84 degrees, and the UV index is 1. Not the same as running when its 84 degrees at noon.
I avoid midday runs whenever possible, and use sunscreen on the rare occasions I run at that time.
Shirtless
More sun = more vitamin D
Related question. For those times when running in the middle of the day during summer is required, do you wear a hat?
I don't because I always assumed that would trap heat on your head but then a lot of folks at the trials wore hats, including many who didn't have the benefit of iced hats every 5k.
Wear a shirt to the trailhead, then run shirtless on the trail. If I see someone of the opposite sex approach, I put the shirt back on; rarely happens, women feel it's unsafe behavior.

You mean most assaults are done by shirtless men? What precious female snowflake fed you that one?

This is really weird behavior
Go shirtless if you have the bod. Gals go for well built shirtless dudes ðŸ‘
Follow the dictates of your culture, thank you.
I hate people that run shirtless. Usually show offs. Disgusting. No body wants to see your body. Why don't you run naked. The pants aren't to hot and sweaty for you?
Sort of a linked question! At what age does it become socially unacceptable to run without a shirt? (I'm 60 in a few months time.) Here in the north west of England there might only be a couple of days a year when it is feasible to run without a shirt (lots of days when the rain is a bit warmer than on other days!!) but I like doing this when possible! But I am also aware that I might not look as good as I did thirty years ago and I dont want to give children nightmares, frighten the horses etc. etc!!!

I'm in my late 50s with the man boobs and the start of the age-related saggy skin complex. So, if I were to run shirtless in the parks/trails, not only would I frighten the women & children, but scare off the wildlife as well 😅. However, I see older fellas with well built, muscular upper bodies that run shirtless and get kisses blown at them by some of the older gals that walk or jog in the park. OTOH, I see older guys walking shirtless with huge guts, man boobs, a double chin, drinking a beer & smoking a cig...and not caring what people think of them. It's a catch 22 for us old farts. But, since I'm kinda homely to begin with, I would probably get the finger from people if ran shirtless...so I'll keep my top on! 😂

Do you look like a stalker or something?😬

The "everything causes cancer" group are just the worst kind of people.
So go get a couple x-rays, smoke some cigarettes, and inhale asbestos.
Some things significantly cause cancer more than others.
