That's what my doctor said anyway.....of course he is a large (size) non-runner himself.

Tell you're doctor that being fat is just as bad on the knees. That's my comeback whenever people ask, "Aren't you worried you'll have bad knees when you're older?"
It won't stop me from running. Plus, if you do the proper stretching and strength work and increase mileage steadily you should be fine. Then there's those who are afraid to run because it's painful "you could throw up," Wetmore once said. When you're training you always risk something, so be it "to suffer as much as we can to see how great we can be..."
Research I've read indicated that running does indeed "wear" your knees but does not "wear them out". Most runners see a small decrease in the thickness of knee cartilage but the underlying bone becomes stronger and more resilient. The net affect of running to the knees and hips is positive because, since your body adapts to the stresses placed on it, your joints will always be very well-lubricated with synovial fluid. A non-runner will actually cause more damage to their knees when walking 100-yards than a runner does in a whole week of 60+ miles.
The only research lending credence to running being damaging to knees was done in the early-80s. Biopsies of SHEEP knees after they were forced to walk AT LEASE A MARATHON A DAY FOR 2.5 YEARS ON CONCRETE showed a small instance of damage. These sheep were also sedentary previous to the study. This study is still widely used to show how bad running is for you despite the fact that most of the sheep had no problem whatsoever with the regimen.
Many people damage their knees while running. Most of these runners would have damaged their knees much sooner/more severly if they were sedentary.
