"Of course, we all know that Bolt can run sub 44 and that a 1:43 is just back to back 51.5. How slow does 51.5 feel to him or any other top sprinter? Clearly, any sub 44 guy can run sub 1:43. They just don't want to. Or so says the average letsrun poster."
Sarcastic, yes, but one of my coaches "when I were just a lad" always said that 400/800 was a natural combination of events, more so than 800/1500. He pointed out that in the 1950s lots of top athletes combined the two and that it was the emphasis on high mileage for 800 runners that came in with Lydiard and Snell that frightened off the 400/800 type. Someone who can run 46 seconds from blocks should be pretty comfortable going through 400 in 50 seconds and, if they have built up strength and endurance could come home no slower than a 53. This does not mean necessarily doing loads of mileage, which might take the edge off their 400 speed, but the sort of things that Juantorena was doing; 1000 reps, fartleks etc.
For a 800/1500 type going through in 50 is so much more like hard work.
