I have to disagree with you there, I'm taking 15 this semester, and it's my lightest one since my very first semester of freshman year. Since then, I've taken four semesters of 18+ hours since then, and I know several teammates that have taken over 20.
If more than half of your courses are Physics, Micro Biology, Calculus, Organic Chemistry or other various advanced topics, then either you are extremely smart or you are barely making the grade with that many units. I suspect that the 18 units you guys are referring to are vacant of these types of courses.

Also from someone else...
Remember that lot of this shoud depend on the type of semsters your school deals with, there is no way a runner here could take 18+ credits and still be able to run.
Personally I am sticking to the 12 hours a semster.
Math Major:
Abstract Algebra 3
Discrete Methods 3
Computer Science Class 3
2nd sem. Gen. Chem (sucks, never finished the sequence) 4
2nd sem. Calc. based Physics 4
Exceptional Children class 3
Math Senior Seminar 1
= 21 hrs.
Rising senior (Mathematical Sciences major)
There is a lab for each science.
3.5 at midterm (and not looking back)
Like I said, 75 mi/wk
BTW, I PR'ed at every distance this year. :))
ANYTHING is possible if you put your mind to it!!
Oh, meant to say that I'm not a dummy, but I'm no super genius either. You just have to prioritize.
Good luck on finals everyone.
Bare minimum bitches...12 hours. I take crazy easy classes too (communications and political science) and damn proud. College is a time to live, have fun, find yourself, and all that bullshit. I love it.
Also, I'm going to laugh my ass off when your fancy engineering job gets outsourced to India in the next 10 years.
That is a decent load, but there are limits to your anything’s possible quote. Time or other resources just runs out.
I have three courses, senior and masters level:
Advanced algorithms 4 units
Automata Theory 4 units
Software Engineering 5 units
I maintain a 3.7 GPA only because I put in 60+ study/school
hours a week. If I take any more units than this with these type of courses, either my GPA drops or I put in 80+ hours a week and get a divorce. A 2.8 GPA friend of mine dropped out of the major and went into Economics. He took 16 units rather than his usual 12 and got strait A's with less study time. So it just depends on what you are trying to do. I just can't and don't see very many people going hard core science and athletics. Maybe you are an exception to the norm.
I'm on the quarter system, so my 17 (52, 185, 61.69/year) are different.
This quarter I'm taking:
Intelligence Studies
Transportation Security
Causus Belli/Game Theory
Uzbek

Wow. That must be a really tough school.
