It looks like Cheptegai received too much of a boost from the home crowd, and unknowingly ran out of his skin until it was too late. It was troubling to watch. I really wanted him to win.
It was horrible to watch. I remember feeling the same way when that female cyclist crashed in Rio. Felt like witnessing serious physiological, and even neurological, damage.
I was screaming at the screen for Kam to keep him in sight and not let him get away. Passing him so emphatically seemed to literally cut off the oxygen Cheptegei was getting from the home crowd, it would've been a little less disturbing if he'd just collapsed and DNFed instead of that painful trudge to the end. I'm so glad and relieved he's fine and was walking around unaided at the finish.
