The most effective thing he can is to own his decisions, say that he believed they were right at the time given the information, and instead of apologizing he should just say he thinks the conversation is very important and he's willing to have it. As I say, I agree. For the life of me I never understand why politicians do not do this. It seems like the most logical way to discuss a decision made in the past that one no longer supports... yet they never do.
