A question for people who don't have a car: Don't you feel like a prisoner in your own city? I understand you can use public transportation, taxis, Uber, etc. to get around But what if you want to go somewhere else? You can't fly or take a train everywhere. How do you manage?
Yes, I do. The first couple months were kinda fun, as I had to slow down my life and get creative with my transportation and actually had more free time because I did not waste time going for random errands or drives. But now I am mostly frustrated. To get out of the city for a hike, weekend trip, or just even visit my family, I have to rent a car. Which is why I plan to get a car within the next month or two. If I added it up, it probably has cost me almost as much as a monthly car payment. The only cost savings is in the down payment for a vehicle or total cost for a used vehicle. The sheen of the carless lifestyle has worn off.
It might be easier if I lived in a more compact city with better public transport or a smaller city, like a college town.
