Don't think you need to fight anyone. Don't let your kid play backyard tackle football if you don't like rough stuff.
PS - you are fat.

Have you ever been to a youth hockey game? I have been to just a few, yet I have seen this kind of thing happen more than once. When it comes to a person's kid, people get very defensive and say stupid stuff.
We should expect it but we don't. We're funny that way. Probably the best way to deal with it is to tell the dude that his kid is playing too rough. Do not spell out the details even if he asks. If he refuses to do something about it you must go to the league or the other parents.
Thanks for starting this thread.
Yes, I'm fat, but my 5k pr's 21:22, on a course with a huge hill and a mile pr of 6:07, and that's at 37, with no running background. I'm proud of those accomplishments because I always got stares from my thin running friends (who aren't runners theirselves), when I tell them I run 21 change, and yes, I can provide links to my results!
Your kid will always be smaller than some other kid. There will always be people who try to start a fight or sneak in a cheap shot/play. It is your parental duty to find situations where your son can be successful.
Realize that a hit outside of the context of a game is assault. You can grab a video and then call the cops. The situation will catch up to the bully real quick when the cops learn from the kid that he was doing those things because the dad had demanded it.
There is this one thing that I have to tell you. If you weighed 235# at 37, I do not believe your running claims. People don't just run fast. It takes practice and as a result of that practice you would have gotten to the 175-185 range. If you were there, then I believe you.
You did the right thing by running away from the confrontation. Your kid should never see his dad get beat up.
