To bad Brianne never won a Olympic or World outdoor title. Seemed like Ashton's dominance in his event got to her. And Ashton wanted her to win almost more than he wanted to win in Rio

Huh?

I'd agree with that.
In hindsight, I think this move was foreshadowed by Ashton's 1500 in Rio and his interview after. The last half of that decathlon seemed like he was barely hanging on, and while he won convincingly, he wasn't quite the same athlete as he was in 2012. In the interview after the race it was clear he was exhausted more than elated; grateful to win another gold, but also keenly aware of the fact that he had to pour his heart and soul into just treading water.
The Eatons have been an outstanding part of the sport. In the few instances I've interacted with them they have seemed like genuinely good people, and the way they have conducted themselves in the spotlight is a wonderful example for all to follow. I hope they stay involved with the sport in some capacity going forward.
To the Eatons: Congratulations, thank you, all the best.

You are wrong. Ashton and Brianne inspired each other.
Its pretty strategic I would say.
His athletic contract for performance probably came due this past years end.
I understood there was a re-negociation for a lesser amount to use the couple as fitness athletes to promote fitness for the nike brand. Nike is $32 billion in sales, giving them a total lets say $300k for endorsing fitness is peanuts.
They will be fine financially and be able to endorse other things they didn't have time for.
Can't pull up their site.
I wonder if he'll announce hes a woman and win woman of the year
It's her fault.
good for him.
Once the joy is gone it becomes work. And work isn't as much fun.
Well done for a great career and a clear headed decision to walk away, instead of limp away.
brianne said last summer that she wanted to have a baby next. this really shouldn't come as such a huge surprise. she was done. and he's done everything there is to do.
Ashton is a good person, from what I have seen. He said he was chasing 2020, so maybe he wants to open the door for some new decathletes with respect to money and such. Eaton will be fine in his next life.
Im not surprised Ashton retired at this point, he has done literally everything there is to do in the decathlon. I am a little surprised BTE retired before worlds this year, as she does not have a global title and without Jess in her way she would never have a better shot. That being said, I didn't see her stretching out to Doha 2019 regardless.
If I remember correctly michael phelps retired then came back for the olympics. He will probably do that.

This. You can't just shut off competitiveness like that

You can channel competitiveness in many ways, athletics is just one. Who is to say that if he goes to work for Tesla he wouldn't bring the same competitiveness?

T&F is an order of magnitude harder than swimming. Unlike swimming, it is very difficult to come back in T&F after taking time off.
Ashton and Brianne should focus on popping out babies to become future Ducks.

If you want to be taken seriously on this messageboard, you need to spell it "moran". As a rule you should misspell a minimum of two words in a post otherwise you are considered an educated liberal and will open yourself up to attack.
