He also ran about 22:15 or so for a 6km XC at Stanford back in late 2002.
sorry, here's the official result from the Farm Team XC Open on 15/Nov/2002:
6,000m
64 Michael Granville NIKE FARM TEAM 22:09 5:57
That is horribly dissapointing.
He is acting now. He won the 400m in the pac 10 meet. Ran 1st leg on UCLA'S winnning 4x400m at nationals, i think in 1999, and also was national champion in the DMR, which broke the American record. I heard his dad pushed him like crazy in high school and once he got to college he became more relaxed.
that's more or ess the story i've heard. all speed, low volume and his dad was crazy. When he lost the state meet one year, I believe that his dad kicked him out of Hughes Stadium.
The story from the state meet loss to Aaron Richburg was that his father threw his second place medal in the trash.
ouch...what a way to become a champion...I mean if that's what it takes who would ever want to be that guys son.
Oh well, good for him for hanging it up and moving on (if this has indeed happened). His achievements stand.
The 800 PR's improved each year under his dad, but got worse each year in college. Even in college, Granville stayed with it the full four years suggesting he still tried to make a go of it, but just couldn't. Did the kid goof off more when left on his own, outside of the dad's watchful eye? Would he have continued improving had he continued being coached by his dad? Or was he working so hard in high school that he had little left to give to his college coach?
trackhead, you repeat the same thing over and over with Granville
just posting results...
and i think he got burned on all the anaerobic work, low volume and his endocrine system was fried. my theory
What other "theories" do you have?
Can anyone point to valid research that concludes that the endocrine system would be damaged by high amounts of anerobic work?
If so, then how do 400 runners tolerate it?
Not trackhead, he just "posts results"
If you look at Michael Johnson's schedule, about 75% of his mileage is easy
it's kind of interesting his progression over 8 years is like a reverse bell curve.
It doesn't sound as if he got lazy out from under his father's watchful eye, it sounds like he started enjoying what life had to offer outside of being hammered into the ground by his dad (that is if these are anything but rumors.)
Granville dramatically improved every year under his dad, then immediately went downhill (in the 800m) when away from him. So blame his dad???
If it really was the anaerobic work, then it's quite a coincidence that it surfaced as soon as he switched training.
Anyway, what about Goucher??? He was the AEROBIC/BASE king and flamed out. You can argue it the other way too.
My point was simply that sometimes having an overbearing parental figure has an affect on things. Luckily, you don't seem to be someone who had an overbearing parent.
