This. I love winter! I love fall too, and summer! I love 4 distinct seasons.
To the guy who was projecting political vomit, I didn't know that we're politicizing winter and summer now 🙄 I love spending time in California but I wouldn't want to live there. Lack of winter aside, the people are ok in small doses but seem a lot more emotional there, hence the crazy.
My family is in NY. They provide free child care, the kids spend time with their grandparents and other family, and I don't have to fork out a grand for plane tix when it's time to go visit everyone. I drive down the road. Right now it is 20 degrees where I am. One of my kids is at their grandparents. The other kid had his own cheering section at his basketball game. Tomorrow we are having a family dinner. I have a mechanic, cop and several nurses at my disposal, and the holidays aren't spent with long hours driving or being molested by the TSA in airports. Sure, I'm cold, but if I lived in California I would have none of that. I do plan to move south when I retire.
I live in New York State. I hate the cold. I personally also have unlimited affinity for heat. Why, then, stay here?
Politics? Hardly. I hate NYS's political culture.
I also hate its tax-culture & oppressive laws.
So why, then, would I stay here? At least move to Tennessee or Alabama or something, right?
Nope. I don't move to those states, SoCal, or other warm places like Arizona for the same reason I don't move to Florida: I f*ing HATE large snakes, and ESPECIALLY hate poisonous snakes. For those thinking about timber rattlers, they don't exist in my part of the state. My snake-phobia wouldn't stop me from moving to, say, South Dakota (as far as I know), but I haven't made that move because I'm dirt poor (and honestly I couldn't even pay for the gas to drive there at this point).

This crap about "I like the cold" or "I like season" is a defense mechanism that helps them cope with the miserable weather that effects their lives on a constant basis.
hard to top this level of stupidity and ignorance.
Been all over Southern Cal many times. Reasons I'd never ever live there:
1) Lack of 4 seasons
2) Endless sprawl in a sea of concrete
3) Lack of history
4) Lack of architecture
5) Suffocating traffic
6) Severely overpriced
7) THE PEOPLE - Between LA and San Diego, I have never met such a high concentration of soft, whiny, narcissistic, vapid people.
The way I look at it, if you love real cities, the East Coast wins hands down. California does have infinitely better access to outdoor recreation and natural beauty. However, the reasons listed above keep me from living there.
At this point, when I get the urge to go play in the mountains, I'll hop on a short flight to Colorado or Lake Tahoe/Bishop. When I get the urge to hit the coast, I'll fly to Big Sur or Hawaii.
Living in So Cal turns people into liberal wimps.

I moved to No Cal from the Midwest over 20 years ago. It didn't change my political beliefs other than I just don't feel any pressure to vote.
It's right on the money, superbly reasoned and written. I would recommend you take a few minutes and read it. There is no more important political topic today. This is what Trump rode to the presidency.
The California described here is exactly what we would have had nationwide if Clinton had won. Except most of the rest of the country would have had all that third world garbage with much less pleasant weather.
The Republic has a reprieve. But it's only a temporary stop in the slide unless the illegal mess is not taken care of.
Can't beat Puerto Rico, man. Everything is free and easy, including weed and women.
Because one of these days the big one (earthquake) will hit
The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.

Agreed. I could continue to pay the mortgage on the SoCal tract home for another 25 years, but I'll sell and have 50% down on the east coast. Real estate prices aside, I can't wait to use infrastructure that actually works. Note: having grown up in NY, weather is a non-issue.
Sure. There are plenty of bargains in Fresno or Stockton.

Agreed. The amount of the Bay Area lacking in SoCal is incredible. This is why I'd take SF over LA even with the increased costs.

Hi Mark!
Don't they have wildfires, earthquakes, mudslides and droughts?
Gun laws are too strict.
What are the pros of having 4 seasons? You get to stare at leafless trees and overcast skies for a few months? SoCal (and NoCal to some degree) is basically 2-3 seasons but the transition between them is hardly noticeably. Nothing like walking around in shorts and flip flops in December.

Where exactly do you live? It only takes one snake.

Change is good. Leafless trees make you appreciate leaves more and it's easier to hunt Squirrels.
There really is nothing like four defined seasons although Global warming has blurred them a bit more than I like.
