Anyone done the protein shake thing while putting in high mileage (100+)? I've tried drinking them in the past with mixed results. I also heard that Paula drank them while building up for Chicago.

When I was using them, I found they really helped out a ton, I was doing avg 80 + mile weeks, made a difference, I felt stronger.

What kind of protein shakes do you mean? I have drunk Slim Fast as a supplement (kind of like Clif or Power bars), and sometimes these days I drink Instant Breakfast with my young'uns... Are you talking about something else? Brand names?

I'm referring to the soy and whey protein powders that you find in nutrition stores. Some brands I've tried are; Joe Weider's Weight Gainer, Ultramet (Champion Nutrition), and Met-Rx Whey Protein. They are all kind of pricey but I pick the ones with the best flavor.
I'm currently building up for Grandma's Marathon in June hoping for a breakthrough. I'll give the protein shakes another try this spring to see if they help my recovery during the peak mileage weeks.

Spirutein and Spirutein Sport is a good one. You can drink the stuff an hour or two before a race and not bonk as well. Even 26.2. You don't fart too much either.
Widers drinks help out a lot, BOB you should try creatine by lifetime fitness, man this stuff really helps you out, it dissolves fast in liquid and keeps you from bonking on good hard training runs and aids in recovery, as does vitaman E, but met-rex and wieders protein stuff helps a lot, add some fruit and make a good smoothie for a post run drink.

Hey, when I start lifting legs in my training I always drink a couple low calorie protien shakes during the week. They have the same amount of protein no fat and not a ton of usless calories, plus they make me feel stronger without feeling bloated or full.
