Before social media it would be entirely possible to self-segregate into groups and have very little knowledge or interest about groups better off than you. Some prole schmuck in the midwest making 100k could think that he's actually making a lot of money and well-off.
Today, there's no hiding behind the veil. You are constantly bombarded with images of people better than you at everything. The guy making 100k KNOWS he's just a prole schmuck working stiff, not special at all. And that his fat wife really does suck. The toll this takes on the ego and psyche "rest" is devastating and will not end well.
