It's so weird how people could give a dog away. I had lived with a girl for a while we both have good careers and we were engaged. We got a puppy one summer but because she struggled with BPD combined with on and off alcohol issues I left her (packed the house one night after she had been arrested she had gotten drunk committing domestic abuse)
But I remember this, the night that happened, my pup (yes mine as i bought him raised him, took care of his vet stuff, took him on runs, trained him). Got between her and I when she was drunk and violent and barked at her to get away.
For the following days after my pup was really smart, and cognitive about all the whirlwind and stress in my life and was more relaxed and helpful and less over the top puppy excited and was the best companion i could ask for though being just a puppy.
I take him everywhere I go, he runs on all my easy runs, goes to breweries, dinner, hiking, dog parks, sometimes to my work. Not in a million years could I ever imagine a situation where I would abandon him - he didn't abandon me. I don't get how people get to that point where they would get rid of their dog.

Some crazy responses here.
It's a dog, find it a new home via the local kennel. If that doesn't work and no one wants it, have it put down. Stop beating yourself up.
I can only assume everyone slamming you is vegan. We live in a country that conducts 700,000 abortions each year, forget the dog.
This is a little to the extreme, but generally the way I feel. Situations change, and it is very hard to own a dog by yourself, unless you work from home or something.
I would first try to give the dog away to a friend or someone I know that would take good care of it. The dog will forget you shortly and grow attached to it's new owner within a few days
You're an idiot! I bet you believe " local kennel" are no kill. Owner surrenders can be killed the day you drop them off. Assuming these dogs are older than pups and owner "can't handle them"!they have no chance.
If you're such a pu**y and can't take care of them pack the dogs up and have them euthananized at your vet bc what they will go through at AC is not fair. Make your good for nothing ex go with you. I hope you never get another dog bc you don't deserve pets.

So I have a situation where I'm going through a divorce and not sure what to do with my pets. Frankly, I do not want them nor my soon to be ex. They are too much for me to handle alone.
This is not a difficult thing to figure out.
Cut them down the middle!

Good luck finding a "vet" to euthanize any healthy pet. This is simply giving the problem to someone else, namely the vet. Like doctors, vets are constrained by the "do no harm" clause and will NOT kill a pet that is not in medical distress or a risk to the public.
check your facts before you fulminate here.
What's interesting to me is that it appears everyone thus far only cares about the dog's well-being and not the well-being of the humans. That dog is a daily reminder for the human who winds up with it of that failed human relationship. I like my dog that I have with my live-in GF, but I'm not sure I would want to have that reminder for the next 5-10 years if we split.
Not sure why it is hard to just take them to adoption events. There will be people with young kids for the dogs to play with. They can form a bond with new owners and then it will be easy to give away.

I'm not the OP, and don't even support the OP, but where are you getting your facts? Can you give me an example of a shelter that kills *owner surrendered pets* that do not have a serious, documented bite history or a medical problem that cannot be resolved .. on the day of arrival? Really, the day you drop them off? I've worked in an animal shelter for more than five years and never saw an example of this. Most shelters have a mandatory hold period for evaluation in the case of owner surrenders. I certainly understand that the OPs attitude needs improvement but seriously, I think maybe you are talking out of your a@@ here.
Actually, most vets will. How many "healthy" do you think leave the shelter. You're as much a fool as OP. You have no idea what you're taking about. Do your homework before posting that you know nothing about.
Take a look at under 6 mo old dogs. This is MI.
What I posted was over 10 yrs ago. Sure you didn't work at the Humane or SPCA.?
Still think I''m talking out of my *ss? Last yr 64% of the animals who went in never came out.

What type of pets are they and where can I pick them up?

Yes, I still do.
I guess you can't read either. Do your own search and get back to us.

We have two goldfish, a ferret and a cat. Thank you for asking.
Also, the poster who mentioned how painful it would be to keep these pets is spot on. I don't need to be reminded how my relationship failed. With that said, I do feel terribly bad wanting to give them away but I feel they will have a better enhanced life with a family who is together and not broken.

Sack the eff up. Not surprised you are getting a divorce. You are too self involved to own a pet, much less be married.
Be a man for once and get the dog a home through a rescue org, not a shelter.
Don't be such an ass. I'm more of a man than you are. You are probably sitting and hiding in your mom's basement and finding enjoyment insulting others!...🙄
