What workout or time trial or race time tells you when you're ready for a 3:20?

A 3:05 marathon would tell you that you're ready for a 3:20.
0/10
1:34 half plus a few good 20 milers
Thanks for a serious answer. Have a half in two weeks. Goal race in seven. Recently ran a 10 miler in 69:12. Felt great.

When I did the work for it?🙄
Trick question. I'm always ready.

That's 2:20, dude. Not 3:20.
The 1:34 half marathon is a closer answer.

I am one of these (many) runners who do much better at shorter distances...so when I first ran under 3:20 (on about 40-45 mpw with two weeks at 50) I had a 1:26:10 half PR and a 38:45 10k PR, both a couple of months prior.
I did not do long runs over 16 miles though and the marathon was not flat. In training I ran the 16-milers hard, in 2 hours (7:30 pace).
I ended up running 7:31 pace exactly for the marathon.
Otherwise in training I would sometimes do long tempos 8-10 mi at 7:00, 12 miles at 7:15...guess these were hard runs, because easy pace was 8:30-9:30. Ran 7 days a week (something I prefer) and thew in some progressive tempos too. Did not do speedwork much.
I think a 1:34 half is borderline. Something like 40 min 10k and 1:30 half (I realize the latter is easier than the former) gives you a very good chance on low mileage. if you run a lot, then it's less of a concern.

No, you just don't run enough

When I ran 3:18 I was running around 71m for 10mi. I really wanted to break 70 and couldn't quite hit it. So I think as long as your endurance is there you're all set.
