That purple prose that wineturtle posted is a bit of an indictment, though Dylan did win a Pulitzer for a book.

With Dylan, it is the song lyrics from the 1960s and the influence on the 1960s that count, nothing else.

I am one of the lucky ones who saw and heard Dylan in rooms with 50 (or fewer) people. Never a fan of his singing but always a fan of the emotion his works evoked.

A friend has a 1963 photo of us in front of 55 Christopher Street and in the background stepping up from 55 Bar is Suze Rotolo and Dylan. In those days you waited a week for the photos to be developed and then you either put them right into an album or they ended up is a shoebox in the closet.She did not notice them until a decade later when someone was looking through a shoe box of her old photos and pointed them out. By then he was much more famous and had written Ballad in Plain D.

Surprising to see Patti Smith stopping in the middle of a song to collect herself but she did a fine emotional rendering of the song and while Dylan's speech was very much to the point, that he had no intention of writing literature or any aspiration to do so and thus implicitly that he knew he'd have been inviting ridicule to actually appear at the ceremony. But there is genius in those early songs. Now, I hope, the committee can get back to the business of honoring great American writers (Cormac McCarthy, Thomas Pynchon at the head of the class), long overlooked out of some vague and inapplicable anti-Americanism.
