Yes but the sisters were only 16/17 back then. Their prime was definitely years after that.

They also said that year that they could beat any man ranked outside the top 200. The guy that beat them challenged them and beat them easily. He was ranked 203 and said they'd have no chance against anyone in the top 500
Awesome replies so far, team.
Please note the title. "Sports" does not include NASCAR, equestrian, or any activities decided by judges or where the human doesn't do the majority of work ;-)

And none of that changes the fact that they were in highschool.

I am calling BS on wrestling, at least after puberty, which the OP suggests. I would love to be proven wrong, tho... link?
Katie Ledecky would have qualified for MEN's 400m and 1500m at the US Olympic Trials, and could have finished 31st and 17th respectively based on her PBs.
17th at the Olympic Trials is certainly sub-elite, at least.
Rumor has it that Riggs was paid by the mob to lose to King, and thought the contract gave him a rematch (which he thought would be additionally lucrative).

I would say this is true for the marathon as well even. The best women in the world run in the low 2:20s. WR is 2:18 something? Making the olympic trials is 2:19 if i recall correctly. I think I would say a 2:20 man would be sub-elite and would lose to a handful of the best female marathoners.
St. Jude Memphis marathon every year is won in about 2:30 by a third-tier Kenyan. Solid sub-elite performance on a cold early December day.
An elite woman could come in and make her name in that race.
Competitive eating.
Molly Schuyler routinely beats anyone not named Kobayashi outside Major League Eating.
And inside MLE, Miki Sudo, Sonya Thomas, even Michelle Lesco have won events against Joey Chestnut and Matt Stonie (who are still #1 and #2 of course).
Some Japanese chick has over 2 million followers on her eating channel (more than Stonie), but only does challenges rather than competition.
Riggs < King ?! (tennis) wrote:

Here is the ESPN story
http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/9589625/the-match-makerActually, the Kenyans didn't show up last year. An Anglo Memphian won in 2:38.
Come on, ladies, women, wives, friends. Why don't you win this thing outright?

Judit Polgar in chess (nipped into top 10 at peak), and now maybe Hou Yifan, though she's bubbling in/out of top 100.

This one may actually be the most surprising one I have heard... Chess seems like such a male dominated "sport"..
I'd say sub-elite in the marathon is like 2:14-2:20.
Above that isn't very elite at all.
Tons of regular guys I know run 2:25 just by adding miles and sticking with it. They were nothing special otherwise.

Bridge is another "sport" recognized by the IOC, and Helen Sobel (Smith) was considered as good as the elite males.
Archery, driving, golf, shooting, and sailing are not sports
