I hope he actually said it. If not I'll have 2 burn the poster that says it on it above my bed =(

Rumor that s that he said it while sitting on the can.
Pre composed this quintessential line one evening as he was leaving the Paddock Tavern after 14 beers. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Blame Bowerman.
He wanted to turn Pre into a sit and kick runner.
Built the whole 72 strategy on waiting, but with the terrorists, it delayed the race for a couple of days.
Viren had extra rest (not to mention blood doping), and Bowerman keeps Pre back in the pack.

Sounds like we should blame the terrorists and not Bowerman.

Why are those stripes upside down on his Pumas?
With out a doubt Pre could have medaled in that race if he understood how good the other athletes were.
I always the actual quote was, "To pay anything less than the least is to sacrifice your thrift."
This topic reminds me of the famous supposed Geb quote that goes something like "I run twice a day everyday except Christmas" and gets quoted pretty frequently around these parts every December 25...much like the OP, I have never been able to track down where Geb's quote originated from either. Makes me wonder if Geb's quote is legit, too.

I dug deeper, turns out there is no video of Moses saying "let my people go!"
We can add Pre's quote to this long list of quotes that do not exist on YouTube, and thus, never actually happened.
Go work, Gumshoe.

So with this sarcasm you have implied am I to assume that Moses never parted the Red Sea?
There's a very small chance that the tale of parting of the Red Sea was just made up.
why would geb take xmas off
In case anyone was actually wanting the answer to this question -- some physiologists were doing a study on acclimation to altitude. This was before the Olympic trials for the Mexico City Olympics, and many runners went up to altitude a few months early to train. The scientists tested their blood and had them run a 5,000m as soon as they got there, and then repeated the test a few more times as the runners acclimated.
As part of the study, they also studied the runners' biomechanics and interviewed them. It was in the interviews that Prefontaine said many of his most eloquent quotations.
This story is in Bill Bowerman and the Men of Oregon, by Kenny Moore. I will look it up and type out the relevant passage when I get home. I highly recommend the book; it is one of my favorites. I used to keep it in the car at all times, to read in case I had to wait somewhere. I could open it up at any page and it was always a good story.

Moses never said that because he never existed.
Pre actually said something similar to the "Live fast and die young." saying.
He said: "Drive drunk and die bald."
Pre: Give me liberty, or give me Budweiser and gas money.
Pre: The only thing we have to fear is.......Spirits closing early.
Pre: When the going gets tough, the tough go bald.
Pre: Give a man a beer, he'll drink for an hour.....Teach a man to drive, sip his drink, and attempt to navigate a turn, and he will mess his car up real bad.
Pre: A beer in the hand is worth two in the passenger seat.

What version of the 72 Olympic final did you watch? Were you high on something when you did? The race I saw looked like Pre running a Fartlek workout. Obviously he had a lot to learn about racing strategy. If he learned it later he might have been the greatest American runner ever.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
