These days, I add some Clorox liquid bleach (.75 ounce diluted with water) to the wash and that handles most stink and hygiene. I share a washing machine with my elderly father so that helps us all out with hygiene.
In the past I had a lot of trouble with perpetually stinky dri fit type shirts. To be honest, I prefer cotton because it feels better. I tried a bunch of sport detergents that were sold at major retailers like WIN which worked for me at first but then stopped working and one or two other similar brands. A couple of principles help to: do not leave your washed clothes in the washer. Get them out and dried quickly otherwise they will stink even after drying. Another thing, wet and soiled workout clothes, get them into the washer relatively soon. Don't let them age in stickiness in a vat of other stinky ness, heat and moisture.
