Probably Webb. I started running track as a freshman in high school, and that was Webb's senior year of high school. I went into a running store and saw the Track and Field News about his recent sub-4 indoors, and I was immediately pumped up to see someone making history right as I was getting into the sport. I watched the Pre 3:53 live as well as many appearances at the trials and world championships. It was a blast to follow the ups and downs of his career. Seems like he could have done a lot more if a few things had been different, but things weren't different, he still had an amazing career to be very proud of.
I miss watching El G as well, to be honest, even though if you held a gun to my head I wouldn't hesitate at all to say that he was doped out of his mind. The Athens 1500 is my favorite race of all time.
Me.
I wish I was still able to turn my body loose on the world. Now I am a broken down crippled old man who can only ride a bike at speed. Great speed I might add, but I loved training and racing.
I loved the banter, the bullshit, the racing. The winning, and the lessons that losing taught me. I loved the camaraderie. I am still friends with competitors.
I'm not even jealous of the ones that medaled at the Olympics.
Track and field is very personal.

Johnny Gray always seemed moody and never able to enjoy anything.
Amy Acuff...still have her playboy spread.
I competed in the same region of Virginia as Webb and ran with a couple guys in college from South Lakes. He's about my age so I've sort of gone through the milestones of adulthood around the same rate so his accomplishments were extra special to me.
I also once got a ride from him to class at George Mason University and talked to him on the metro and was freaking out at how cool an experience the whole thing was. He's a bit hyperactive, lots of energy, but a very good and classy guy.
Webb.
In his prime, every time he raced I always had the feeling that something big might happen. Sometimes big things did happen and other times there was a letdown, but it was always fun to get excited about the possibility of what might happen.

I would have to go with Paul Tergat. He always made for an amazing race.
I was going to pick Tergat as soon as I saw the thread title. He couldn't kick with Geb, but he was tough as nails.
What happened to Webb in Worlds and Olympics - bad luck, injuries?
Can't believe he's only 33. Does he represent what the normal life for a track and field athlete should be? We're so used to big performances at "advanced" ages.
