I think we could say the same for you.
I think we could say the same for you.
I heard he was part of a Russian research project that went bad. Apparantly Russian scientists recruited a bunch of Canadian runners to come train in Russia and partake in an experiment, by drinking a special potion two times a day, that was supposed to increase endurace, boost muscle recovery and unlock the magic speed gear inside each of us.
In a recent press release, representatives from the Russian Athletics Alliance (RAA) commented that during the experiment the potion that was supposed to be given to the national cage fighting team was accidentally given to the endurance athletics squad. Apparantly some of the endurance athletes got early warning of this and stopped drinking the potion before any harm was done. But here is the good part ... the story goes on to say that James had gone off on a trip to train at sub-freezing temperatures (as part of another experiment with the Wooley Mammoth Alliance) and did not get the memo. When he returned from the sub-freezing temperature trip, James was told about the switch-a-roo and was directed not to take the potion. However, James had become so addicted to the potion that he couldn't stop taking it. Thus, he is now the Beast that he is today.
I know this story seems unbelievable, but I know it was true as it was told to me last night by James' sister Helga.
At world cross he needs to walk up to Gebrselassie and in his best Drago voice say "I will break you".

Most drug takers will take drugs at the level where they assume (incorrectly) that those they are competing against are also taking drugs. It is never an intelligence issue and seldom a financial issue.
The guy is 2 or 3 levels behind the best runners, it would seem pointless to take drugs to go from 3 minutes behind the best in a 10K to 2 minutes. If I am a 15 minute 5k guy, why would I take drugs to get down to 14:30? It would be tempting if I was doing 13:30 drug free, but not so far back. This guy is too far back to be taking drugs. If you assume he is on drugs right now, then the guy is a complete nut because the drugs are not putting him anywhere close to the best. If he was within a minute of Ritz, then that would change my point of view considerably.
Maybe he took drugs to see if a mid-pack guy built like a behemoth would generate a disproportionately large thread on letsrun.
Wow! Ana Bolica is such a good name for a drag-queen. :-)
Is theft something only perpetrated by the poor, or only over comparatively meaningful amounts? No. It spans economic classes. The difference is only in how the theft is accomplished -- by a guy in a ski mask with a gun, or a guy in a suit with a briefcase; the simple act of shoplifting a meaningless item, or screwing one of your tenants out of an extra $25 which won't even pay half of a days bar tab.
People cheat based on more complicated psychological factors, even if the potential outcome doesn't justify the risk.
That being said, the sequence of pictures says "Juiced" to me. Does it make you mad? Too bad. You don't like being on the bad end of racial profiling or stereotypes, you, a bunch of white punks? Cry me a river.

I would take the odds and bet that he is not juiced.
I would rather take a thousand dollar theft by some guy with a suit and a brief case instead of losing one dollar to a nut job with a gun and a ski mask. Money is just paper, but the guy with the gun will at times take more than that. They are not the same crime. The brief case guy should do a month in minimum security and the gun toter should be doing 5 to 10 years maximum security. It would be better for everyone if the gun toter picked up a cheap suit and brief case like everybody else.
He is juiced. It's impossible for someone to be that big and run as well as he does.
he is obviously juiced. look at the old photos, look at the improvement, look at all the extra muscle he's carrying. for a runner, he's the fcking terminator.
Ok lets assume he is smart. Given. He is earning a PhD at Stanford in Electrical Engineering- he is not an idiot. Ok. Now think- I know and he knows that a runner needs arm muscles to be good- but any spectator knows that giant upper body does not really aide a runner...WHY would someone so smart try and max out his upper body to run a 12k??? Woudln't he work on his legs and abs?- there would be no reason to carry around an extra 20 lbs in arm muscle for a 12k...it makes NO sense. I also think its funny for you folks who dont even know people to throw around accusations...get a life...
Also- really look at the pictures- the difference is not that great...a year's worth of diet change and weightlifting could easily produce those results- his shoulders are a little more defined and triceps are larger- but really...is that call for alarm??
I looked at those pictures again and realized the Farm Team hasn't been blue for a couple years. I think the 'thin' picture is from 2003. Does anyone have a picture of this Beast from 2004? How about from his UCSD or Stanford Days?
Being a friend of his, I'm finding this thread to be pretty funny.

Dude, I agree that it would be exceptionally stupid for this guy to be on drugs because he's simply not good enough. I made that very point about 4 posts ago. I'm not arguing with you about that at all. I'm arguing with you about the fact that you feel it is significant that he is a PhD candidate. It is not significant at all. Case closed.
Maybe it is not the deciding factor, but it is one more reason why he would not have to turn to drugs. Some of these runners have their backs to the wall because running is about all they know. This guy does not have his back to the wall in that regard. I agree though, that there are more compelling reasons why he would not take drugs.
wow! an agreement of sorts on letsrun! thats a first.
