Barry Fudge. Who? Why?

He was Minister of magic, but moved to the muggle world.

He has done a lot of scientific research on altitude training and is an expert on the rise of the africans in endurance running. He is not a coach but oversees the whole UKA programme.

IMO if you're not using altitude training then you're letting others have a competitive advantage!

A lot of scientific research? What has he done? He's only in his thirties isn't he?

I'm not looking to defame the man, I genuinely know very little about him. On the face of it, seems a curious figure to be the nominal leader of British distance running.

-not a runner

-very young

-not a running coach

-no history of managing elite athletes or coaches in any sport

-hangs around druggie coaches

Has a bit of sports science knowledge and liked by the right people in the UK federation. Hardly an overwhelming CV.

When Terrence Mahon abruptly departed as British national distance coach after only one year, he issued a cryptic statement that made pointed reference to "Barry Fudge, who plays such a crucial part in Mo Farah's success."

When the BBC Panorama program came out last year and the rest of the British press joined the chorus, many people insisted that Farah was the "real" target. My observation, then and now, is that if the British press were really after Farah, they would focus on Barry Fudge.

Instead, the British press studiously avoids any mention of Fudge and his close association with Farah in any story with a remotely negative slant. The game was and is always to separate Farah from the American Salazar, with whom they hate having to share Farah's glory.

Barry Fudge is the guy in charge of the testosterone micro-dosing. He's not involved with the EPO, Farah goes to Aden for that.

How is this bloke a "world class individual"? What has he done to justify this description from Mahon?

I didn't start this thread as an insinuation towards a doping conspiracy, I just find his status really peculiar, how did he end up in this job? Come on letsrun geniuses/sleuths, any more info?

Contrary to what happened to the other children who ignored Willy Wonka, Barry enjoyed the fudge. Because Barry believes in locally sourced, sustainable agriculture he flew to Ethiopia and lived there temporarily for a week so he could enjoy locally sourced fudge without feeling guilty about it. And that's why he was pictured with the Aden group.

Who is this man? What does he do?

How is he the head of UK Endurance?

I found his linkedin page, he got a PhD in sports physiology from the university of Glasgow in 2007 and then worked at the english institute for sport several years after that. Seems to have fairly solid qualifications.

He's a physiologist. He did some work as an underling to well known scientists in Kenya and Ethiopia looking at Bekele and a few elites.

He got the job as physiologist for UK athletics. And embedded himself on the coat tails of Farah. He claims to be heavily involved but that's doubtful considering Farah is in the US.

So he got in the position because he rode Farrah's coat tails. Claims to be involved but he's just a figure head guy who doesn't understand coaching.

As any British distance runner and they'll tell you the same.

Mahons quote is certainly tongue in cheek. If you look at anything the bumbling possy that is UK athletics puts out about Fudge, it's about his instrumental role.

This guy plays the role of being the physiologist that comes out and vouches for the evident doper(s).

Every doper has one of these guys around. Lance had Coyle. Can't remember the name of the guy that was Radcliffe's physiologist. Swart is Chris Froome's.

Think Chris Carmichael and Lance Armstrong and Ferrari. Then, think Barry and Mo and Aden. Ever see those buildings with the glorious fake front, but are just an average building behind it? There you go.
