Thanks for the results. Clint...2:17 c'mon man what's going on?????????
Unfortunately, some of the worst weather conditions I have seen for a marathon. The organization and event were great, so not taking anything away from a good day in Austin overall. The top runners ran very brave, I know that I was not willing to risk injury/health in the hot and humid conditions, dropping out at the half.
Apparently, the eventual 2nd place finisher went through the half around 1:05, which I thought would have been suicidal. By the time we reached an hour into the race, bright sun and 70 deg temperatures were baking the ashphalt downtown. It was pouring rain until literally 5 minutes before the gun at 7am. Then we faced a headwind for basically the first 10 miles as the clouds and humidity moved out briefly. Weird as I walked to the finish that a new front kind of came in and it became cloudy and breezy again for what was probaly the last 3-4 miles of the lead runners. Strange weather, but that is Austin.
A great and deep field (especially on the men's side) was completed stretched out with huge gaps. Clint actually ran what I would say was a gutsy, very good race. The winner was amazing if you ask me, in those conditions he looked unusually strong at mile 20. For every elite who finished, there was probaly one who DNF'd (not proud of this) or who basically walked home. For example, the champion of the last three years struggled to a 2:23 finish, while 2:11 marathoner and sub-2:10 hopeful Tobia Hiskia came a very long way to run 2:37! The marathon can be cruel in those type of conditions. Part of me wanted to fight it out, part of me is happy I choose the less risky route. Still a great event, well done John Conley and crew!
Nice to see Paul Aufdemberge get his 1st Masters win. 2:22 In those conditions...coming from Michigan....that was a pretty good showing.
I think that pvail's account makes Pilja's 2:18 debut seem even more impressive.
Only five deep this year???
Men's field was loaded.
Women's was weak.
Odd.
Aufdemberge and Pilja were impressive. Pilja looks pretty strong went he went by at 20 miles, I think he overtook a couple of runners in the last 10k. I am surprised Juan Martinez did not catch Aufdemberge actually. Martinez and I ran together for the first 12 miles. I surged ahead for a couple of miles and he decided to kept an even pace. He was so efficient, small and compact with a short stride. We must have looked funny running side-by-side; I was a giant in comparison! Aufdemberge was impressive in Columbus as well, on a windy day were he ran 2:20. When he gets good weather conditions, he will run a very good master's time!
nice debut by the TRLA boys, well done fellas.
