According to Magness the goal of training should be an improved race performance. One should not solely focus on vo2max due to there being other qualities that effect race performance. Such as lactate threshold and running economy.
Daniels seems to be focused on improving vo2max and while he does suggest training at other paces the end goal is improvement in vo2max which should improve race performance.
The thing is both of them are right. If one does improve vo2max they should improve and people do improve using Daniels system. The thing that Magness is suggesting is a change in mindset. It's a refocusing on the purpose of training. It's not just about improving vo2max it's about race fast and there are multiple ways to improve race performance not just vo2max.
