Butchart's improvement is the best of the group.

From 13:29.49 pb to 13:13.30 in the span of one race. That's an amazing progression.

The Spaniard Abadia going from 13:26.98 to 13:12 is probably as happy as Butchart.

Think of all the 13:25 to 13:30 guys in the US. I'm sure that a few of them wish they were in this race.

Correct. Just as if I ran a 10.99 100m I could honestly say I ran 10.00.

Or to be more accurate, I could say I ran a 100m in 10 seconds.

Last year he ran 13:00.49 on June 4 (8th in Rome, 12:58 was winning time) and today 13:00.99 ... only 2 weeks earlier into the year.

Granted he won this race, but also not really a strong field. Last I checked he isn't on the list for the Pre 5K next week.

The issue last year was he seemed to disappear after that race in Rome, only running one other 5K, July in Heusden-Zolder (also a weak field), the rest of the season, that I remember.

Right now he is the second fastest Ethiopian, but between now and when they select their Olympic team (most likely based only on fastest times) I would guess more than 2 other Ethiopians will go sub-13.

Hopefully he can find his way into a race with a stronger field (he was originally on the start lists for Shanghai, not sure what happened there) and go a bit faster.
