There were slight (very slight and short-lived) upticks during the administrations of Bush I and Bush II, but crime has mostly been going down for a quarter-century in the United States.
Lots of factors involved in the decline--but for those who keep saying "things were better before," what things *exactly* are you talking about? Not crime anyway!

Obviously this is because our nation's jump in incarceration rates are the cause of this. Lock 'em up and get 'em off the street is working. Thanks, liberals.And the rise in herion OD's is having a Darwinian impact on the losers.
Also, I'm still stockpiling guns 'afore Osama tries to take 'em away.
Also the general aging of the US population has to be a factor. Older males ==> lower testosterone ==> fewer crimes.

A lot of people would deplore the lock-'em-up movement of the last 20-30 years; but it nevertheless has certainly played a large role in the lowering of crime rates.
And lot of (different, mostly!) people would deplore nikeboy's point, but it is certainly just as important. An aborted fetus, if it had been carried to personhood, would have been vastly more likely to have grown up to be a mugger or rapist, rather than to have grown up to be a person who, say, helped cure cancer.

It isn't. Some things are worse, but a lot are better. Not sure why so many focus on the few negatives instead of the many positives.
That's because the criminal activities of the Oligarchs no longer get prosecuted. They used to -- at least up thru the 80s when guys like Icahn and Milken were actually held accountable (now these thieves re presented as respected elder statesmen) And they are stealing more of our wealth than ever before (at least in our lifetimes).
AS far as poor people's crimes being down --well that will happen when you jail more people than any other nation in history and don't count all the assaults that take place in prison in your stats.

It could be a lot better.

valid point--though reporting standards of some crimes were not as good/thorough in 1960.
in any case it's certainly true that things have been getting better (at least as far as serious crime is concerned) in the last quarter-century, so maybe we're headed back to 1960 levels. certainly nyc has seen astonishing drops in some crime categories (like murder).
what is *not* true is that "everything is getting worse in the u.s. and the country is going to hell in a handbasket." some things are getting a lot better.
