I thought of Seb too, but don't forget he was pretty competitive at 400m too. I believe he ran on a few 4x400 teams for GB

What on Earth are you talking about?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zersenay_TadeseNils Schumann is the WROAT.
What about Roger Bannister, all his training was geared specifically for a mile and he ran only about 20-30 miles a week. He probably could pop off a solid 800-3k but after that it would all fall apart.
Ezekiel Kemboi. 13:50 5000m PB and 3:40 1500m?

There's a lot of discussion on here about which athlete has the greatest range of all time (GROAT), but i was wondering who had the worst. Nick Symmonds came into my mind first, but I am a fairly casual fan so idk.

without a doubt, it has to be Mo Farah

While Nick is a decent miler, I'm glad you put his name up there, if for no other reason than to dispel they myth that he would be successful if he moved up.

Neither have any all-time great 800 runners.
Other than former 2-mile world record holder Steve Ovett.
Usain Bolt. Never runs anything longer than 200m.

How about Pat Porter similarly? Wasn't competitive under 10k and 12k cross. I think his pr's were 13:36/27:40 but was one of the best in the world at World Cross in the 1980's. You would have thought he would have been a lock for sub 2:10 in the marathon but maybe he moved up to late. I don't think he ever broke 2:18.
As opposed to Alberto Salazar who like Porter was a 4:01 miler at best in his younger days but ran 7:40 for 3000, 13:11, 27:22, and 2:08 for the marathon.
The guys I notice with the worst range are your 3:55-7 milers with 1:48 at best 800 speed and try to move up and can't break 13:50 for 5000. Pure milers but don't have the kick to make a 1500 team. Lots of guys like that.

Yep. Dude ran 45 low in the 400m, and couldn't win a decent high school meet in the 100m or 200m.
for distance, probably someone from Japan. There are guys there who run world class marathons but probably couldn't make ncaa nats

This is a good choice

He's run well at shorter stuff but the poster is referencing the fact that, despite many attempts, he's never been able to translate his phenomenal half marathon times to good marathon performances. A 58:23 is much better than a 2:10.

Coe was my first thought.
Also, you have to consider how many times and under what circumstances he ever tried those distances. If he had tried (and failed) to break 8:00 several times and 13:30 as well, then I would say you had a point.
Based on time, he was the greatest 800m and 1500m runner of all time during his era, additionally he was likely the greatest Championship 1500m runner of his era (or any era). It is not like NOW where the drugs can make any specialist good at 800m. They had drugs, but not what they have now.
You would not expect the only person in history to run 1:42 AND 1:41 to ALSO be good at 5000m ... or even 3000m for that matter.

It is a good choice. But some is because **nearly** all of his accomplishments are in championship races- which is always 1500m.
Take out all championship races, he has a career's worth of mediocre-bad races at any distance, offset by very few good ones he pulls out from no where.
Anyway- Stember's on the list. He won an indoor 800m- but when ppl aren't nearly peaked. He fancied himself an 800m runner, but wasn't at the pro level vs the good ones, when they were on form.

Stember went to the Olympics in the 1500.
