Fundraising for NYC Marathon Charity

Hi All,

I have a few questions for those who have ran a marathon for charity before. My hubby signed up for the (Jimmy) V Foundation for Cancer Research-- awesome charity by the way. His goal is to raise $3,000 before November. He launched his page last night at not ONE SINGLE person had donated yet. He has 200+ friends on FB, I have 400+ friends, multiple people shared the link, liked the post, etc but there was not a single donor !!! I feel so upset.

In your experience, what worked for you on raising funds?

I'm sure as it gets closer he will be able to raise the 3k. He should just post updates on training, the foundation etc without overdoing it. November is still a long ways out

Also in terms of the running community (& the comments that you'll like get on this site)- many runners see the charity route as the option chosen by those runners who just want to run a major marathon (NYC, Boston, Chicago) but can't run a qualifying time or don't want to go through the lottery. In other words what was stopping him from fundraising for this organization before it was required for his marathon entry

FaceBook posts don't work well because they're impersonal and easy to ignore. It's easy for your "friends" to pretend to have missed a post by just skipping over it. FB prioritizes posts anyhow; if no one likes your post in the first hour or so it won't show up on the top of your other "friend's" timelines. I've raised money in the past and just got a trickle of help from FB posts.

Emails and personalized letters were much more effective for me. I got a lot of support from family and close friends. But my biggest supporters and what pushed me over my fund raising goals were people and companies with whom I do business.

My opinion is just that SO many people have fundraising pages now. And people are at every street corner, and outside the grocery store etc. I think in general, people probably have grown sort of numb to it. In other words so many people are fundraising for so many different things that you just hit a point that you ignore them all. Not trying to be rude or funny, I just think that's how it hits people now. My sister was asked to help fundraiser for the daycare that she pays 200 bucks a week for. I had 10 or more different friends asking for money for Boston. If you start donating to everyone, you will go broke, but if you choose one, the others may find out. Desensitization I guess.
