So I came across this videos today thanks to an aritcle on the Spikes/IAAF website ( http://spikes.iaaf.org/post/promoting-portland-the-weird-way ).
A few thoughts.
1) I think the videos are very well done.
2) I'm embarrassed for our sport that they have less than 3,000 total views (not each - total) on youtube (although it looks like the Felix one is doing better on facebook with 3,888 views).
3) Which one do you like the best?
Here they are:
Evan Jager: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFVlhWRwg2c
Allyson elix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je2Xze_Q-z8
Jason Richardson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yppw3GHjPZo
There are two versions of the Richardson one. Here is the other version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw1WtmPhRWY
I think the Richardson one is the best but like them all. Felix is way more popular on both youtube and facebook as she's a mainstream star whereas Jager and Richardson are just gods in our track geekdom.
Which of these three clever Portland 2016 promo videos do you like the best? Jager, Felix or Richardson?

They all just tried to make the "Portland is weird!" point through awkwardness with the main character, which made them pretty bad. Jager's is the least awkward because they didn't use his discomfort to make the point.
Richardson showed the most charisma in front of the camera, but his skit was kinda dumb. Felix's was really dumb, and you could almost see her disdain on her face. Jager had the easiest one, straight forwawrd and made its point without conveying wierdness through the discomfort of the character.
At least they said said is was a track meet in one way or another. -
yeah, these are all really dumb
makes me never want to go to Portland -
Three way time for not the slightest bit clever or entertaining.
-
Wisely they did not give the distance runner a speaking role.

I agree that all 4 videos sre well done and have an interesting off-beat vibe.
I like the alternative Richardson one the best!
See you in Portland! -
These left me emotionally violated , now all I want is to watch some golf. I could just see the producer telling the director , "don't let the ponytail man talk".
-
Jager's is the best.
The other two had to talk and show that they're bad actors, just awkward. Jager just had to stand there, way less awkward. -
I used to be a jager fan - no longer
I want to just cut that stupid looking man bun off his head -
I thought the videos are well done but Ken Goe pointed out that two of the three athletes (Richardson/Felix) aren't even competing at USAs.
-
They really didn't give Felix any material, did they?
-
The first Richardson one was really good. The second one they tried too hard.

"I want to just cut that stupid looking man bun off his head"

Yes, and if he injures himself on that F-tard of a bike, he'll f-up his chances at worlds, trials, etc........ Why take a stupid chance like that and even get on the f-ing f-tard of a thing? Solinski tripped on his dog and his career was over, how much easier on that retard contraption! -
I liked the Richardson one the best, with Jager a close second. They're both mildly amusing. The Felix commercial was a waste of a very likeable athlete.
Jager's man bun is ridiculous. A few years from now people will look back on manbuns like we now look back on mullets and laugh even more. -
rojo, your thread has been up roughly 26 hours how many views in total do they have now?
-
That Felix video led me to her supposed 47.72 4x400m split at Beijing, which makes me wonder what she could run the 800m in. You never know if a 400m runner (actually someone who focuses on 100m-200m) will take to the 800m, but she holds her form very well from 200 to 400m, really hauling in her competitor in the last 100m, and she has the build of an 800m runner coming from the sprint side. If she trained for it, why couldn't she break 1:55?

Rojo,
To provide more context and to point out why the YouTube views are low, these spots were produced for local television to sell tickets to the event. They have been playing for the past 2-3 months and the content targets local Portland demographics, etc and plays to locals and inside jokes, etc. I thought they were well done and were well received on TV as that was their purpose. Can't say if they helped ticket sales locally, but I guess we'll find out at the event how many seats are empty. If you have never spent time on Portland's east side and seen the crazy bikes some folks ride, the Jagar spot wouldn't seem as clever :) -

The commercials have been shown nationally. I saw them on some recent national broadcast - Armory, Millrose, or the marathon trials, I forget which. -

Nation wide in geographic availability perhaps but to a very small niche audience.. Nowhere near the number of eyes a regular run of the mill "national commercial' for denture glue or guppy food would bring.
