More recently, and maybe at least an honorable mention, Allie O's teammate Jonah Thiesen ran well under 16 in state meet at Bartlett a year or two ago.

fixed it
Realistically, one of the top 3 FM guys of the last decade or so (Gruenewald, Ryan & Millar) would probably supplant somebody on this list...possibly Gene McCarthy. On paper, Ryan probably has the best credentials of those 3 guys, with a #5 all-time for the VCP 2.5m and the CR at Bowdoin.
My only interest in this would be to put a top 7 together for each state based on their XC accomplishments in HS only. There is so much difficulty in getting even close to a consensus for something of that nature, that I think then trying to score this as a super race between states is an exercise in futility as there are way too many variables in play.
As I mentioned earlier, we all look at these things a bit differently...I'd have a guy like Kevin Hogan way up my all-time list due to his accomplishments over 3 years while somebody else may say that Anthony Smith's stellar senior season puts him ahead of a guy like Hogan.
Just my two cents.
Since I put out the original NH list, NH Runnah pointed out that Eli Moskowitz, as a FL finalist, deserved a spot, I would like to include him over Hernandez.
Thanks for keeping the list going. This is a fun thread to read through even though most of the names from various states are unknown to me.
Here are Washington times for all runners, not just the 60s studs:
Best I could do for Washington
1. Gerry Lindgren (8:40i for 2 mi; 13:44 for 5k)
2. Matt Davis (14:09 3mi; 3x WA Champ; 2x FL Qualifier, 31st, 3rd Place; 9:04 3200 as Jr.)
3. Tanner Anderson (14:31 5k; 2x WA Champ; NXN Champ, 3rd Place; 8:56 3200)
4. Issac Hawkins (14:39 3mi; 2x WA Champ; 2x FL Qualifier, 26th, 12th Place; 8:56 3200)
5. John Dressel (14:46 5k; 3x FL Qualifier, 14th, 2nd, 6th Place; 27th World Jr XC; 8:50 2mi)
6. Andrew Gardner (14:45 5k; WA Champ; 3x FL Qualifier, 4th, 6th, 11th; 8:54 3200)
7. Rick Reilly (8:48.4 for 2mi; 14:00.2 for 5k)
Maybe Dressel should be fourth on here. He has better times and FL places than Hawkins, just no state xc titles but only because he ran behind a dude who dropped a 14:31 5k.

Good stuff! I would put Dressel ahead of Hawkins. I think Wietz was fair to come off the list.
For the 60's boys FWIW, I would add that Reilly was 2nd at State in 64, 1st in 65. Lindgren was 2nd in 61, and 1st in 62, 63.
Connecticut only has six names, all very good, and I would add Mike Cotton. He wrecked the state for at least two years in the mid 70's, still has the ACC record in the 10,000m, and made All-American in that event in either 79 or 80 when the only guys who did that were African and ran for UTEP.
Other names from CT to consider, but probably not faster than anyone on the list would be Kelley, Burfoot, Rodgers, the younger O'Keefe ........ Actually, on second thought, I might replace Coombs with O'Keefe.
Can we get back to this. Not sure why it was changed. If it ain't broke....
Massachusetts
1. Abdirizak Mohammed
2. Alberto Salazar (8:53.8 for 2mi; 14:04.8 for 5k; 12:22.5 for VCP @ 2.5 mi)
3. Andy Powell
4. Franklyn Sanchez
5. Jonathan Riley
6. Art Dulong
7. Mike Mahon
Kimball was a super stud in High School. The Cali runners the last ten years are studs also, but in my opinion a step below Kimball.
This should prove how fast Kimball ran in High School:http://lynbrooksports.prepcaltrack.com/ATHLETICS/TRACK/TFN/1974tfn.htm

BEST HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS.
Amen. The last few posters don't get it either.
To all of you posting solely about track times or what they did in the Olympics, please stop!!!
If you don't know enough about what they did in cross-country while in HS, please just refrain from posting.
I'll give it a try.
1. Matt Tegenkamp
2. Chris Borsa
3. Joe Falcon
4. Chris Zinn
5. Tom Breckenridge
6. Ben Naeger
7. Mugeche?
Glad someone mentioned Phil Downs in Wisconsin. 3 time large schools state champ and 3 time Kinney/Foot Locker finalist. Based solely on HS XC accomplishments, he's got to be in the discussion.
Michigan
1. Dathan Rtizenhein (2 time state champ big school division, XC PR on Michigan course of 14:10...head and shoulders above anyone else on this list)
2. Grant Fisher (2 time state champ big school division, XC PR 14:52)
3. Jason Hartmann (2 time state champ big school division, PR 14:51)
4. Maverick Darling (3 time state champ smallish school division, but big PR 14:53)
5. Ryan Shay (4 time state champ - granted small school division but still, PR 15:30 but he always blew away the competition and local legend)
6. Jake Flynn (3 time state champ smallish school division, PR 15:12 but also blew most people away)
7. Mark Smith (3 time state champ medium school division, PR 15:25 and sub 9:00 2 miler guy on the track in the 1980s and local legend)

I really appreciate the input, but like I've said before I am not an expert on
a lot of these states so the more information you can give the better. I am guessing that you mean Peter Ryan vs. Nick Ryan from FM. I'm just double checking as there seems to be several FM guys better that him on their school record list:
http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/TeamRecords.aspx?SchoolID=9580No way can Texas leave off Colby Lowe. No way.
Charlie, I thought about Eichner. Newkirk and Williams won three titles in the state's biggest class. That's pretty staggering. I could argue for Lane Boyer and Alex Hallock as well. And was mentioned before, Tim Gundy deserves consideration.
