Cabada has tons of experience making questionable decisions!

I agree. Was actually meaningless post that only an idiot would read something more into other than he's looking forward to running the trials. Everyone who runs has a chance at making the team, that's kind of the point of the race, it's a throw away sentence.
Dumb title & thread by the OP. Cabada doesn't say he is willing to lead or press the pace himself - only that he looks forward to competing (duh!).

I normally read the post's with out bothering to read the name. This made me look up.
I'm sure Newton doesn't appreciate the fact that he posted a pic of himself in a Reebok jacket.

nor did I
malmo's point is spot on .
You may quote me : The Marathon Is A Harsh Mistress
He didnt say he was trying for a pb, just to go super fast.
My thought exactly. His post suggests he's looking to be pulled along for a pb.
I think he has nothing to lose and knows that HE HAS TO RUN A PR to make the team. Why not go for broke?
I don't think it's likely that he PR's or makes the team, but he's proven people wrong once or twice before.
Everyone in the field aside from Rupp is running to make the team. Rupp can't really be challenged. They're going to jog along staring at each other for 2 hours, and then Rupp will open it up, winning effortlessly in 2:22 while two other dudes with no balls and no hope of being on the screen during the Olympics make the team and spew on about how proud they are of their effort and their race plan.
More Shakespeare: "...it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."

If they go they will be caught and dropped by 10 miles. Either way everyone has to make Rupp race 26.2 miles. And not a "jog fest" because Rupp will be unstoppable if it is.
Why will they be caught at 10 miles? All of the top contenders can run 2:10 pace for 15 to 18 miles with hardly any effort at all. The marathon is a different animal. It feels easy, very easy in fact, until the point that it becomes hard. At that point it suddenly becomes extremely hard.

I wish nothing but the best for Galen, but I'll believe it when I see it. Debut marathons - even for elites - don't go according to plan more often than not. Crazy things have happened to seasoned veterans after 20 miles.
The smart play is for a sub-2:12 guy (who's experienced at the distance) to run on/ close to goal PR pace from the gun and hope that anyone running their first marathon encounters trouble sometime after half-way. If you can solo 2:12 or better you will have people go with you to share the load along the way.
Dudes Done,
I wish Newton would yank there sponsorship from this guy, as he wears everything(other brands all the times, even Adidas Spikes) from time to time.
What the hell is wrong with the people running Newton ? must be too stuck up in the Hills of the Rockies or something.
Cabada Run's 2:23!
The field will go out in right around 1:06 - then the favorites - Meb, Rupp, Ritz, Luke, etc will close in 1:03++ and crush the dreams of the 2:12 sub-elites

+1. That's one of the best summations of the marathon I've ever read.

Rupp will be unstoppable because he is the most physically fit runner that toes the starting line. It really doesn't matter how the race plays out, "jog fest" or otherwise he is the favorite in any scenario. Just as Farah is the favorite no matter how the 10k unfolds.

2:22? That will not get G. Rupp to the Games. If the winning time is that slow it will be 2000 all over again for the Americans.
The Tyson/Malmo like Ritz:“I know those feelings and the anticipation and all that. And going in, it gives me confidence knowing I’ve done it before and you just have to want it,†Ritzenhein says. “I mean, everyone wants it on the line, but you can’t fake it once you get past 20 miles. That fire and desire have to be there and if it’s not, it shows.â€

Salazar has not a great record of peaking runners for World Champs/Olympics/Olympic Trials......Just look at what happen to Salazar in 84.
If a runner pushes it and runs 2:10 pace it will increase the odds it won't turn into a track race last 10km. Also Rupp is a newbie to the distance who knows what will happen between 30-35km.
The weather is another wild card right now. It is 71 degrees in LA right now and if the weather holds it could be ugly for all the runners running especially those who have trained in cold rainy snowy conditions under 50 F (Oregon, Flagstaff, Mammoth, Michigan, Utah etc). Hopefully they are doing some warm weather taper in Tallahassee, Gainesville, San Diego, or Tuscon (Hansons Team)
