The RUPP Factor - why is nobody talking about the recent retirements/trials skippings and RUPP

It's called the Galenfly effect. In chaos theory, the Galenfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state, thus all these great athletes having an excuse to "retire."

Even women are dropping out of the trials... NBA stars are retiring... something's not normal for sure.

Hall retires, Teg retires, Kobe retires, and now Peyton Manning is talking retirement. What are the odds? It can't just be a coincidence. Other professional athletes are being eclipsed by Galen's star power.

Ten years ago we had Steve Jobs, Bob Hope, and Johnny Cash. Now we have Galen Rupp.

I am not surprised. Was Ryan hall really going to be a factor? Abdi? Teg? All of them were on their last legs (pun intended).

Rupp jumping in the trials was not that surprising either.

True, and let's not forget David Bowie died, then the Snape guy, old dude from the Godfather and someone in Jefferson Airplane. Rupps announces and then everyone decideds there is not point in even living anymore.

Hall even retired before Rupp declared though, so maybe it is actually Hall's retirement that is causing everyone to die. And all these deaths caused Teg to retire. Teg doesn't want to run in a world without the guy from Jefferson Airplane.

And since God is Hall's coach, this is truly HIS plan. As is the stupid OP.

Let's not forget the DOW is dropping like a sheep learning how to fly. Experts have discussed bonds, Chinese recession, and oil prices, but why aren't they talking about the RUPP factor?

A lot of flippant responses here.

The answer is yes. A lot of these guys realize they are now has-beens. Maybe they each had a shot with really only each other to compete with. But enter an all-time American great, they realize they have no chance. Better to retire in these circumstances than after a defeat.

Abdi, Ritz, and Hall were all great, and did us well as Team USA members, but their time has come and gone and they know it. They opened the floodgates for the likes of Rupp, and now they get to sit back, watch, and enjoy along with the rest of us.

Rupp personally killed Lemmy, as well as the drummer from Mott the Hoople. He placed a phone call to David Bowie and told him to die - which he did. In 1990, Rupp threw a brick at a helicopter and caused it to crash, killing Stevie Ray Vaughan in the process. Why? Nobody knows...

Rupp is also the head of ISIS. Their enemies all "retire" too.

Well, as soon as Alberto and Galen enter the arena, you know that it will not be a clean fight. I think it is discouraging for many runners to know that Salazar has been doping Galen since he was a teenager and so there is that feeling of this is no longer worth it...although it is more likely that Galen had nothing to do with the decisions of others.

Honestly,

I believe all feel a victory would bring too much suspicion and too much scrutiny ANYWAY.

Most importantly, sponsors can leverage potential suspicion to offer less money.

We're at the point in the sport where NO ONE would believe a white, American could win the Marathon clean-- and anyone who did (thanks to the Lance effect too) wouldn't be marketable due to rumors and suspicion.

We sure wouldn't see him on a Wheaties box!!

At this point, the sport is faced with legalizing doping or disappearing (except for hobby joggers.)

I think that they all stepped aside so that they could watch the FAILURE OF RUPP. I know that I purchased a ticket to LA so that I can heckle along the course. You get booted from Eugene if you are anti Rupp.

That seems to be the point. I don't think it's far off to say that these athletes past their prime were planning on trying to finish on a high note by capitalizing on the lack of depth in the marathon, but once Rupp and to a lesser extent, Derrick decided to move up they realized it was time to hang em' up. Basically, retirement was in the back of their minds, but the new guys might Ving up pushed them to throw in the towel.

It's funny that most of the responses are less than genuine so far. Seems like they may be the retirees themselves (hey, your retired now so why not get back on lets run) or someone emotionally invested in them.

You typically see runners raising their game, coming out of the word work and/or giving it a last go during an Olympic year, not hanging em up or deciding to skip right before trials. This makes Meb really appear to be a champ. That or the dollar is more valuable than his pride.

Rupp scares no one in the marathon. Remember how the top marathoners in the world NEVER thought of Mo Farah as a factor in his debut at London? Remember they were right? That is how the top American marathoners view Rupp. They may be right or wrong but Rupp scares no one at this point. Runners World and all of the so called experts are the only ones that view him as a possible contender.
