Didn't know even at 140000 miles on a car it is not recommended using the highest octane gas.
The Octane required for an engine has nothing to do with mileage. It is based on the cylinder compression ratio. Higher compression engines require higher octane. Modern engines can run on lower octane than rated (the knock sensor will detect knocking and pinging causing the engine computer to adjust the timing), but that will still damage the engine over time so you should always use the recommended octane for your vehicle.

Also looks like I wasn't to blame for it. All due to the water pump. I called my regular mechanic yesterday and he told me I'd had the serpentine belt replaced in 2015.
P0117 for engine coolant temp sensor 1 circuit low
P2181 for cooling system performance
Your "check engine" light was probably on before the water pump finally quit. A water leak is another sign. "Funny noise" with the engine running another sign.
Chances are much higher than 50% that SOMETHING was giving you a clue that the water pump was failing.
Give up on that hunk of metal and get a Toyota. Ford Escapes have been great for us for over a decade.
You ivy league types might be allergic to the Ford logo though, so maybe a Lexus.
