Thanks for the thoughtful response. I agree that it's not easy to be satisfied with internal validation -- we all like external props. But it's worth trying to catch ourselves when we fall too deeply into that trap.
In this case, I think it's a curious double-standard. LRCers are criticizing hobby-joggers for seeking "trumpet blasts" from others for their measly accomplishments. The standard view seems to be "Sure, go waddle your marathon, but why do you feel the need to tell the world about it?"
In other words, we're telling the hobby-joggers to settle for interval validation rather than seeking external plaudits. I'm just saying that maybe LRCers should take their own advice with respect to their own accomplishments.
