I spent 5 weeks in bed with severe mono starting in June of 1962. I contacted Wilt in 1963 or 64 and moved to LA by way of the October 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Doug Scorrar ran 2:20.02 in Kitchener in 1975, Dave Ellis ran 2:19:47 ran 2:19:47 in Boston in 1966 but was he a Canadian yet?, Ron Wallingford ran 2:19:24 in St. Hyacinthe in 1966, Nil Lavallee ran 2:19:15 in Ottawa in 1977. I do not have other times in those years.
2:20:10 Wolf Shamberger 1973
2:20:17 Bruce Shaw 1973
2:20:17 Jerry Tighe 1973
2:28:18 Bruce Kidd 1974
Yes, Wolf & Bruce 'Gunner' Shaw ran those times at the Newfoundland marathon.
Neither of these two, whom I know/knew personally trained by intervals alone though. In fact 'Gunner' ran mostly easy pace most days but was consistent and raced a lot locally and well. Wolf used to train at a really high intensity even with his long runs.
I know as I once used to run with these guys. Runnig with Wolf was always a race for me whereas running with good old 'Gun' was an exercise of having your ear talked off - meant in a nice way. We all still miss him since his untimely demise March 1984 :(
