Yesterday I went out on one of those "unplanned" long runs, where I was just feeling good and went out for a bit over two hours for 18.5 miles. I didn't have any breakfast, food, or water before or during the long run and felt like I hit the wall at around mile 16, but kept on going because I was 3 miles away from my house. Previously, the longest run I had done was 13 miles. Today, I went out for an easy 6 and felt fine.
Does this type of training burn away your muscle after your glycogen storages have been depleted?
Would this type of run have some sort of negative effect?

When marathon training I often got right out of bed and ran 20-22 miles @6:40 pace at 5:30 AM. I never seemed to have any ill effects from this type of training.
However if you are in high school training for the 1600/3200 there really is no need to run more than 90 minutes (12-13 miles) for a long run.
But sometimes you can make an exception. If it feels good do it. Some days you run harder, farther, etc. If all you do is what some one wrote on a piece of paper .... what's the fun in that.
