All the U.S. 10k qualifiers could get in a last minute half marathon and make the trials. Seems like 2016 marathon is wide open. Chris Derrick?

Maybe because it's not a 10K. Just guessing there.
Because they've been brainwashed into believing they are too soft for the Marathon. They have been brainwashed into believing that the Marathon is a "mysterious" event that can "destroy your speed."
They are afraid of failure.
For once, I wish Nike or adidas or a brand would offer their stars a $100,000 bonus to take the swing, no strings attached.
Chris Derrick is our most gifted marathoner since Salazar. Rupp will run sub-2:04. Too many guys think they are made of glass. Running a marathon won't kill you or your career.

This.
If I run a marathon, my body might not recover in time for the 10k at the trials this summer.
There's a lot of guys who may make the marathon team on the right day, that have zero chance of making the 10k team.

The marathon trials are February 13. The track trials are in July. That's 5 months! How long does it take to recover from a marathon?
Actually real trackies look upon the marathon as beneath them. It's for washed up trackies. And the half is a step below that. Serious trackies look upon those events the same as riding off into the sunset.
I don't think it's that they won't recover in time. They probably just don't want to do it. I know I'd rather do a 10,000 than a marathon any day.

This is the correct answer

Salazar was not the most gifted marathoner of his era; that would be Tony Sandoval. Ryan Hall is the most gifted (physically, if not mentally) marathoner of this era.
Aaron Braun, who was 5th at the 10k trials in 2012, will be going for the marathon. Look for him to have a shot at making it.
There are already 20 sub 2:10 guys running, if all the 10,000 guys ran, Christ, people would think it's the Kenyan trials.
A hard 2:10 minute run? Should take about two weeks to recover.

Yeh, me too.

Ask Pat Porter. Great 10k/ XC runner... think he tried once and ran 219?

We're talking about U.S. runners, right? There haven't been 20 sub 2:10 guys in the last 10 years combined.
Good question. Why not at least run it for real through 16 miles then re-evaluate how you feel and your position in the field? You can easily pull the plug at that point with no harm done, all you got was a good workout.
Perhaps he means 20 guys around 2:10, or capable of that time.
I think in the track distances it's more measurable, and more certain, if you are the #2 or #3 or #5 runner while the marathon is seen (and actually plays out to be) more of a crapshoot.
For the same reason, ironically, Rupp is considering the marathon because at the world stage the crapshoot would allow him a chance to win (whereas in the 10,000m, according to LetsRun.com, he has a more certain chance of medalling but not of winning).
Some people have no desire to run a marathon.
I might have been able to run in the mid 2:20s for a marathon, back in the day. Long story short, I was good for about 2 hours - running, biking, hiking, etc. the amount of mental energy that it took for me to go from 2:00 - 2:15 was equal to that of 0 - 2:00. I did 100 mile weeks, ran plenty of 16 - 20 milers, but I had no desire to run a marathon. I would imagine that there are more than a few guys who run the 5,000/10,000 who have no interest in running a marathon.
