Not rupp certified
If he wants in, i would think he could jog 2:10. They may want to test his fluid bottles though.
now THAT would be interesting. far fetched, i'd say, but still fun to ponder.
It would be great if he did run the trials BUT it won't happen. This sport continues to be almost totally uninteresting.
Do it Rupp! First marathon an Olympic Trials win. U.S. distance GOAT!!!!
he's doing a fun run half marathon, not even a sanctioned course.
there's no chance he is planning on racing this all out. he'll probably run around 64 or so just as a long tempo
It is certified. It is not sanctioned, which is a separate thing, but that can be accomplished before the race.
He doesn't have to make a decision about the Trials too soon. But he probably realizes that the field is extremely weak, which it is.
If he is planning on running the trials he may want to stop running workouts with 1500/5k runners at practice. NOP has been posting quite a few instagram vids of the guys doing workouts and he is all of them. Sorry boys, but unless he plans on doing a marathon while still doing track workouts it's not going to happen.

You mean like Salazar did in the 80s? I seem to remember Salazar debuting in the fastest time ever for a debut. He then broke the world record.
It is interesting. I would have thought that Rupp would be gearing up for indoors. He was very banged up this summer and may feel better about some long stuff than trying to work on his finishing speed (which also seems to be an exercise of diminishing returns).
Professionally, he has a better shot at a 10k medal, but he has been there and done that and will not beat Mo. Financially, he would do much better winning the trials and being the top US marathoner at the Olympics.
Being a runner in the Portland area, I just find it funny that Rupp would run an event as grass-roots and low-key as the Holiday Half. I hoped they comped his entry and that all the waddlers/walkers get out of his way. :)

Can he not attempt both?

Walkers will not be a problem. It's an out-and-back but they have two lanes to keep the return runners separate.
The 5Kers share the start and finish with the Half participants but virtually all the 5Kers are done in an hour.
It's a nice gesture to do a race with his biggest fans.

Sure he can, if he wants to come in dead last. I imagine it would be nearly impossible to medal running two events of that distance and the goal for the Olympics is always medaling. He potentially could earn Gold for the 10K if Mo has an off day. His chances of medaling in the marathon are slim. The only reason to make the switch is $$$ and I doubt Nike has him wanting for more at this point.

Effectively, no. As good as Rupp is, the 10K / Marathon double is the stuff of legends and has yet to be pulled off in the modern era. It's similar to asking someone to medal in both the 1500 and the 10K simultaneously; while the factor between most common events is around 2 or 3 (100 -2> 200 -2> 400 -2> 800 ~2> 1500 ~3> 5K -2> 10K), the marathon is over 4 times the distance of the 10K, plus the surface is different.
Yes, I think Emil Zatopek has done it decades ago, but running was arguably less competitive then and Zatopek was far more dominant in his time than Rupp is today.
I could see Mo pulling it off even though he has yet to nail the marathon, but Rupp would do much better sticking to one or doing the usual 5K / 10K double.
Zatopek did the triple as previously mentioned, and Viren won the 5k and 10k then finished 5th in the Olympic marathon which was Viren's first marathon, yes back then you could debut in events at the Olympics, Kip Keino I believe ran his first Steeple ever in the 1972 Olympics, getting 2nd in the heats and then winning Gold in the final,
I doubt Rupp runs the marathon trials, but he has the kind of ability to win ANY Marathon in his debut bar none, The Olympic Trials, The Olympics (if people were still allowed to debut there, which they are NOT anymore, Londan, Dubai, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, New York etc. 26:44 for 10000 is good for anyone and going under 26:50 twice that is real ability for anyone, he is a threat in any Marathon.

Not to mention starts and stops at the Adidas North America campus.
The 10k/marathon double is totally possible. The 10k is scheduled for Saturday August 13, the marathon is scheduled for Sunday August 21.
Rupp goes for 10k gold, has 7 days of recovery and comes back with the marathon win.
The 10k will only be 2k of racing. With Rupps fitness he should be fully rested a week later. A tempo/10k sit and kick should add a little pop in Rupps stride.
What do you think, Alberto? The time is right for the full 'thon.

Why would he finish last in both? Just focus on the 10K, rest for a week, do the marathon on whatever fitness he has. He's not going to medal in the 5K anyway.
No freaking way
