If your premise is accurate, I'd say the Japanese balance out the talent-development equation with their intense interest in professional road running like the Eikeden, which has big corporate backing and broad public appeal.

we'll see if this translates to Olympic and diamond league success though. we all know Japan has depth but for despite Brett's claim I don't think the levee will break. they train too hard.

Which part of your PR is your PR do you have difficulty comprehending?

I appreciate what Brett Larner does but I just wonder what is the audience. He is writing in English, which is obviously not the language of Japan, in a way that is purely Japanese nationalistic. Who is this written for?
I will guess that he is writing for T&F fans who are interested in following the sport in Japan, but who do not read Japanese, or who do not read it very well. I am one of those people -- I regularly read his site.

My guess is that Japan has a lot of people who are bilingual and can speak and read English rather well.
Your guess is wrong. Brett is a "henna gaijin".

There are no Japanese who are capable of being fluent in multiple languages. Now that ass-sumption is very telling.
now they can get 7th at an international championship race... in 10 years, maybe a top 5.

Try to keep up. We are talking about 10k ability and marathon ability. The
official PRs aren't necessarily accurate. I don't know why you are having trouble with this.
Nice! This is awesome...but why in late November and not over the summer? I guess they both have the olympic A standard now, but still kinda strange that they did this now and not during the summer season.

The main peak for the Japanese is in the winter. The biggest race of the year for the corporate team pros is January first, and for the college guys it's January 2-3.

Your ignorance of PR is overwhelming. It is hard to believe how ignorant you are.
BTW. Please ventolin to post some imaginary PR values. He is rather good at inventing PRs that never happen.
What this points to is a strong developing program for Japanese male distance runners with quality and depth. Yes not all of these runners will be 10k specialists outside of Asia, but it will bode well for a slew a great marathoners.
We have nothing like this in US. US athletes worry about going "pro" having a contract and what seems like to be more training than racing and an inability to race international. They are pleased with being the top american.
What most got my attention in watching this race video was the fans: the track was PACKED all the way around with people standing in lane 5 and beyond. With the fans so close, that must have been a really exciting race to run. I would love to see something like that happen in the U.S., where fans could actually stand in the outer lanes. (I guess the old 6 lane track at Oslo simulated that situation, as the fans were "right on top of" the athletes).
isn't that his road PB?

No, the second link provided includes track (28:08) and road 10ks. The track 10k is his best time run.

I don't understand why you are being some mean and inflammatory about this. Especially considering how you're wrong. Hall clearly was capable of faster than 28:08. His official PR is irrelevant to that.

I don't think you know what "ignorance" means. I know what his PR is. That literally means I'm not ignorance of his PR.

It was partly that way long ago for HS track. But, pro sports marketing took over and people found other sports to root for (basketball, football, WWF, etc.). In Japan there is more interest because they are focused on certain sports they find very appealing. Running is one of those sports. The USA cannot emulate that level of fan sport.
