and none of them did anything notable at Oregon. Only No L has done well and that has all been at OK State.
And they will NEVER win a Cross championship
Thomet actually ran an 8:48 (Indoors), and has broken all of Dunbar's Alaska high school records.
What impresses me about this group is their outstanding academics. All three are Honor Roll kids (Thomet is an elite international student, Tamagno has a 3.95 GPA, and Hunter is a top student at his high school in Virginia).
I agree that this could well be a great class, but lets' not forget the class of Rudy Chapa, Alberto Salazar, Don Clary, Ken Martin, et al. They won a national championship, and this current group could very well win a few of them before they are finished.
Were those four all in the same recruiting class?

Lots of potential. We will know in four or five years.

My recollection is that the large class included:
Art Boileau, Rudy Chapa, Don Clary, Ken Martin, Bruce Nelson and Alberto Salazar. This group made up the Fall of 1979 Oregon team (along with Bill McChesney, Greg Erwin and Jeff Nelson).
As good as they were, they had some impressive competition from Washington State, who had Joel Cheruiyot, Samon Kimomwa, and Henry Rono on their team.

Except you don't know that. Hunter for all we know could run 3:56 this year.

They were NOT From the same class.
OK, smart a$$, who from the group of Clary, Boileau, Chapa, Martin, Bruce Nelson and Salazar were not from the same class?

what makes you think hunter or tamagno will do anything notable in the next few years?
tamagno has only improved his mile PR by a few seconds from freshman year to junior year.
chappa.
salazar
mcchesney
martin
borleau
clary
check out their pbs and american and world rankings. Even little kbown borleau ran 211 marathon and won two marcedes in LA.

Could Phillip Rocha pick Oregon as well???? damn I hope so he reminds me of Centro. GO DUCKS
Those 3 plus King Ches,Maton,Neuman and Anderson Oregon is almost a lock for NCAA Cross next year with all the Seniors on Colorado and Stanford teams. :) that's a hell of top 7 for the Ducks next year :)
Not even close to the best distance class ever. How about a michigan class that had Webb & Brannen? Not to mention the Arkansas classes of the 80's. For all the hype the ducks have, they greatly underperform on the national stage as a team.

And Willis!!!
This Oregon high school recruiting group is good. They have excellent coaching and resources. Hopefully these guys will get a quality education that prepares them for a life after running.
Willis came the following year.
Oregon does not underperform. Their guys show up when it's time to show up. For them that happens to be NCAA track and field championships. You can't be everything to everyone and Coach Powell has decided to use the fall as training for the rest of the year.

I find it hard to believe that uncle Phil would allow Oregon cross country to only be fall practice.
Why even have a cross country team if you're going to use it as fall training?
Cut the XC program and stop wasting your athletes' time. Too bad for those Oregon kids who actually want to compete in cross country. Congrats to Powell for only doing 1/2 his job. Hopefully he's just a volunteer during the fall.
