Consider this....at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games:
There were 26 swimming events (including men & women) and medals were won by 19 different countries. (I'm not including diving, sync swimming (UGH!), nor Water Polo in these figures).
There were 46 track & field events (including men & women) and medals were won by 38 different countries.
In total there were 28 sports included in the AthensOlympic Games and there were 37 disciplines included within those sports. Overall, medals were won by 75 different countries.
These figures tell me that swimming could very well have been a MORE competitive sport at the Olympics than Athletics/T&F given the ratio of medalist countries per events contested.
Regardless, Swimming USA is probably still the closest organization I could find as compared to USATF. Obviously there is no exact match, but I think the Swimming USA vs USATF comparison is a more valid one than a for-profit organization vs USATF comparison in terms of compensation.
