The 10000m race is the longest on track race and normally was a good time to go to take a break whether at a meet or watching in on television. In the last decade the 10000m has picked up popularity due to Haile and Paul and the event's popularity continues to grow. In 2005 thru 2008 I feel it will reach it an all time high due to several athletes who have something to prove and one who don't want to lose. The women's 10000m in championships promises to equal whatever Kenenisa Bekele and his opponents display on the track.
The two prime candidates to spark an influx of fast times among the women's race Huina and Ejegayehu:
Huina Xing (Chn)---------25 Feb 1984----30:24.36
Ejegayehu Dibaba (Eth)---21 Mar 1983----30:24.98
Werknesh Kidane (Eth)----21 Nov 1981----30:28.30
Yingjie Sun (Chn)--------19 Jan 1979----30:07.20
Jane Wanjiku (Ken)-------14 Jun 1979----31:04.34
Lucy Wangui (Ken)--------24 Mar 1984----31:05.90
Paula Radcliffe (GB)-----17 Dec 1973----30:01.09
Lornah Kiplagat (Ned)----01 May 1974----30:12.53
Gete Wami (Eth)----------11 Dec 1974----30:22.48
Derartu Tulu (Eth)-------21 Mar 1972----30:17.49
Galina Bogomolova (Rus)--15 Oct 1977----30:26.20
Benita Johnson (Aus)-----06 May 1979----30:37.68
Lydia Cheromei (Ken)-----11 May 1977----31:41.09
(pr from age 15)
the Ejegayehu wants to prove she should have won the Olympics and Huina will be out to prove she can win again, but the race doesn't promise to be between just those two women. The only thing that could stop the World 10000m race from being one of the all-time fastest will be the possible bad conditions.
The mens's 10000m race will be the usually Kenenisa Bekele and his countrymen fighting off other Africans, but the opponents may change in 2005. If two Americans focus on the 10000m they have the ability to challenge for lesser medals.
Kenenisa Bekele (Eth)------13 Jun 1982-----26:20.31
Sileshi Sihine (Eth)-------29 Jan 1983-----26:39.69
Geb Gebremariam (Eth)------10 Sep 1984-----26:53.73
Nicholas Kemboi (Ken)------25 Nov 1983-----26:30.03
Abdullah Hassan (Qat)------04 Apr 1981-----26:38.76
Sammy Kipketer (Ken)-------29 Oct 1981-----26:49.38
Richard Limo (Ken)---------18 Nov 1980-----26:50.20
John Cheruiyot (Ken)-------13 Dec 1981-----26:52.87
Zersenay Tadesse (Eri)-----08 Feb 1982-----27:22.57
Boniface Kiprop (Uga)------12 Oct 1985-----27:04.00
Moses Ndiema Moses (Ken)---01 Jun 1986-----27:07.29
Mebrahtom Keflezighi (USA)-05 May 1975-----27:13.98
Bob Kennedy (USA)----------18 Aug 1970-----27:37.45
The ultra fast times should continue in 2005 along with great battles all the way to 2008 (where the Chinese may await with one of Ma' former athletes).
